The pieces are screwed in place. If you're looking for a good pull-apart kitchen shear try Cutco. I have both and they are both expensive and excellent. Pull-apart is very convenient for cleaning, however, I actually use this Red Multi from Henckels more, I think because for my hand, it is ergonomically superior to the Cutco pull-apart.
